Understanding Infertility

What We Mean by "Infertility" — and Why It's Rarely One Simple Answer

Infertility is described as having trouble conceiving after 12 months or more of frequent, unprotected intercourse (or 6 months if you are over 35). Around 30% of infertility problems originate in women, and in many cases female factors — alone or alongside male factors — play a role. It is a medical condition, not a personal failing, and in most cases it is something we can investigate, explain, and treat.

Dr. Lida approaches every fertility conversation with the same principle: understand before we treat. That means listening carefully to your cycle history, your health background, and what you have already tried, before recommending a single test or medication.

Whether you are just beginning to wonder if something isn't quite right, or you have already had months of unexplained disappointment, you deserve a clear diagnosis, a realistic plan, and a doctor who will walk the path with you — including, if needed, guiding you smoothly to IVF consultants we trust.

Common Causes

What Can Make Conceiving Difficult

Female infertility usually traces back to one or more of these areas. Identifying which one (or ones) applies to you is the whole purpose of the fertility workup.

Ovulatory Disorders

The menstrual cycle works in harmony with several glands and their hormones, and many factors can affect ovulation — including hormonal imbalance, thyroid conditions, stress, pituitary tumours, and eating disorders.

PCOS

Polycystic ovary syndrome is the most common hormonal condition affecting the female reproductive system — around one in seven women are affected. It arises from hormonal imbalance rather than ovary disease, and can affect ovulation and make conceiving more difficult.

Tubal Factors

The egg is fertilised as it travels down the fallopian tube, so any block or scar can prevent fertilisation. Endometriosis is one condition that can lead to scarring of the fallopian tubes, and tubal factors are assessed as part of your workup.

Uterus Problems

A fertilised egg implants in the lining of the uterus, and conditions such as fibroids or polyps can hamper this implantation. Fibroids are non-cancerous tumours inside the womb, and polyps are small bumps growing on the uterus lining.

Diagnosis

How Do You Diagnose Infertility?

There is no one-size-fits-all fertility plan. Dr. Lida builds each pathway around your history, your test results, and your goals.

  • Hysterosalpingography — an X-ray contrast is injected into the uterus to check for problems inside the uterus and to identify whether fluid passes through and spills out of the fallopian tubes.
  • Ovulation testing — an over-the-counter kit indicates the surge in luteinising hormone (LH) before ovulation; a blood test for progesterone can also detect ovulation.
  • Ovarian reserve testing — determines the quality and quantity of eggs available for ovulation; recommended for women above 35 or at risk of a depleted egg supply.
  • Imaging tests — a pelvic ultrasound identifies fallopian tube or uterine disease; hysteroscopy or sonohysterogram examines the uterus where a regular ultrasound isn't enough.
Infertility Treatment for Females

Treatment Options — Medication, Surgery & Reproductive Assistance

Treatment depends on age, the duration of infertility, and personal preferences, and aims to restore fertility through medication or surgery, or to help you conceive with assisted reproductive technologies.

Ovulation Induction

Medications stimulate the ovary to produce and release eggs when PCOS or other issues affect ovulation, often combined with IUI. Common medications include clomiphene citrate, gonadotropins, metformin, bromocriptine and letrozole.

Surgery

Laparoscopic surgery corrects problems with uterine anatomy by removing fibroids and endometrial polyps. Tubal surgery removes fluid, dilates or creates a new opening in a blocked fallopian tube — a rarer option given IVF's higher success rate.

Reproductive Assistance

IUI (intrauterine insemination) injects millions of healthy sperm into the uterus at the time of ovulation. IVF, the most effective assisted reproductive technology, retrieves and fertilises mature eggs in a lab before transferring the embryo into the uterus.

Frequently Asked Questions

Your Fertility Questions, Answered

When should I seek help for infertility?

If you're unable to get pregnant after 12 months or more of frequent, unprotected sex, if you're above 35 and not pregnant after six months, if you've lost two or three pregnancies, or if you've had a miscarriage, seek immediate medical help.

What causes female infertility?

Common causes include uterus problems such as fibroids or polyps, blocked or scarred fallopian tubes, problems with ovulation (affected by stress, thyroid conditions or hormonal imbalance), and PCOS — the most common hormonal condition affecting the female reproductive system.

What is IUI?

IUI, or intrauterine insemination, is a reproductive assistance technique in which millions of healthy sperm are injected directly into the uterus at the time of ovulation.

Does Dr. Lida offer IVF?

Yes. When medications or surgery don't help, IVF — the most effective assisted reproductive technology — is one of the options discussed, involving egg retrieval, laboratory fertilisation with sperm, and transfer of the resulting embryo into the uterus.
